Fisher & Paykel’s (F&P) latest Optiflow high flow interface is designed to both deliver and enhance nasal high flow therapy. Duet features an asymmetric design, one small prong, and one large prong. This unique design targets the dead space which may result in increased CO2 clearance, PEEP, and patient comfort.

Asymmetric Nasal High Flow Therapy uses an innovative cannula design to enhance pressure and dead-space clearance. In this video, the effect of an asymmetric cannula on dead space clearance is visualized using a lung simulator. On the left, you can see a symmetrical cannula; on the right, an asymmetrical cannula, i.e., the Optiflow+ Duet Interface. The Asymmetric cannula creates unidirectional flow, purging gas and reducing anatomical dead space. 1
